If you are interested in starting a team, please contact League Director Ken Seebeck.

Individuals can compete in the New Jersey League as independent riders, but what’s even more fun is having a team to train and race with! Whether you are a student or coach, the League wants to do everything we can to help you form a team at your local school or in your town. If you’d like to see a team form in your area, please send us an e-mail so we can help you out. The league can help in many ways, including help:

  1. Parents & Athletes find coaches
  2. Coaches form teams
  3. Teams become recognized by their schools
  4. Teams find additional volunteers

Below is some detailed information about teams. We encourage all athletes to recruit some fellow students and have some fun as the newest member of our wonderful NICA community.

Types of Teams

[dropdown_box expand_text=”Types of Teams Info” show_more=”Show” show_less=”Hide” start=”hide”]

There are two types of teams.

    • School-Based Teams: Comprised of full-time students from the same school, public or private. School-based teams can be “official” or “unofficial”.
    • Composite Teams: Comprised of full-time students from more than one school within the same district or other geographic proximity. Composite Team Limitations: Composite Teams are intended to be temporary solutions toward building school-based teams. If a composite team has 5 or more students from the same school, those students will be scored separately from the rest of the composite team unless a petition to do otherwise is approved by the league director.

Don’t have a team to race with? That’s ok! Students can compete as an independent racer in the League Series. While they will not be eligible for the Team Overall title, they are eligible for the Individual Race and Overall titles. Independent racers need not register a team, and should only register for the series, being sure to denote that they are racing as an “Independent” where appropriate on registration forms. All other rules apply. [/dropdown_box]

Team Registration

[dropdown_box expand_text=”Team Registration Info” show_more=”Show” show_less=”Hide” start=”hide”]

All teams must register with the League. Doing so provides insurance coverage for all coaches and volunteers, as well as supporting League programs.

In order to register, the team’s Team Director should contact the league director.

The price for registering a team varies depending on the “compliance” level of the team leadership.

New Teams:
With licensed Head Coach/Team Director: $125
Without licensed Head Coach/Team Director: $250

2nd Year+ Teams:

With level 3 Head Coach/Team Director: $125
Without level 3 Head Coach/Team Director: $250

If you have questions about team registration, please email League Director Ken Seebeck.  [/dropdown_box]

Divisions

[dropdown_box expand_text=”Divisions Info” show_more=”Show” show_less=”Hide” start=”hide”]

New Jersey teams will be Division II Teams. As we grow our membership and team roster, the New Jersey League may move to two divisions. Larger teams will then be designated Division I, with Division II being made up of smaller teams.

While Division I and Division II teams will race separately, they will be treated equally by the League in all aspects. The separation is only intended to provide a fair race environment. [/dropdown_box]

Team Scoring

[dropdown_box expand_text=”Team Scoring Info” show_more=”Show” show_less=”Hide” start=”hide”]

Teams are awarded points after every League race, which count toward the teams’ standings at that individual race and for the overall series. Both girls and boys points count toward that team’s overall score. However, teams need not have boys’ and girls’ points to score for a race. Due to the difference in team size between divisions, Division I teams and Division II teams are scored differently.

For Division I, the team’s score is highest score possible out of the following boy/girl combinations:

BBBBBBGG
BBBBBGGG
BBBBGGGG
BBBGGGGG
BBGGGGGG

For Division II (The current NJICL model), the team’s score is the highest score possible out of the following boy/girl combinations:

BBBG
BBGG
BGGG

For more information about Team and Individual Scoring, please refer to the League Rule Book (PDF) (Section 8: “Team and Invidivual Scoring Rules”; pp. 20-21). [/dropdown_box]
